Educational qualification required to become an IAS:

  • The candidate applying for the Civil Services 2021 examination is required to fulfill the following criteria:
  • The candidate should hold a bachelor’s degree from any recognized universities who have appeared for the qualifying examination and are awaiting the result or who are yet to appear for the qualifying examination, are also eligible for the preliminary examination.
  • Such candidates will be required to submit proof of passing the said examination along with the application for the main examination having professional and technical qualifications recognized by the Government or its equivalent.
  • Those candidates are eligible to apply who have passed MBBS or in the final year of any medical examination, but have yet to complete an internship, they can also appear for the main examination. However, they will have to submit a certificate from the concerned university that they have passed the final vocational medical.

Age limit for becoming an IAS:

  • The candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and will not have attained the age of 32 years (for the general category candidate) on 1 August of the year of the examination. The age limit set in relation to caste reservation varies.
  • The maximum age limit for Other Backward Castes (OBC) is 35 years.
  • This limit is 37 years for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
  • The limit is 40 years for defense services personnel unable to operate during the war.
  • For Ex-Servicemen candidates including commissioned officers and ECOs / SSCOs who have rendered military services for at least five years till 1st August of the year and have been released
  • 1) On completion of assignment (those whose assignment is to be completed within one year from 1st August of the year, otherwise through dismissal or discharge due to misconduct or incapacity or
  • 2) due to physical disability due to military service or
  • 3) Invalid or
  • A relaxation of up to a maximum of five years will be granted in the case of ECOs / SSCOs, who have completed the initial period of five years of military service assignment by August 1 of the year and whose assignment has been extended beyond five years And in whose case the Ministry of Defense issues a certificate that they can apply for civil employment and they will be issued on three months’ notice on selection from the date of receipt of the offer of appointment, this limit is 32 years.
  • For ECOs / SSCOs, who have completed the initial period of five years of military service assignment, this limit is 32 years.
  • For disabled candidates, this limit is 37 years.
  • The limit for the occupation of Jammu and Kashmir from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1989 is 32 years.
